Canada Wide Sector Survey to be released

Vancouver/ Calgary February 22, 2016

Canada-wide statement:

In 2014 and 2015, the Social Enterprise Sector Survey collected impact data from non-profit social enterprises in all provinces and territories of Canada (except Quebec, where the Comité sectoriel de main d’oeuvre économie sociale et action communautaire conducted a sector survey).

In 2013 and 2014, 1,350 of more than 7,000 confirmed social enterprises across Canada reported at least $1.19 billion in revenues, including over $828 million in sales. They paid at least $442 million in wages and salaries to 31,000 employees, of whom 76% were mission-focused employees. Social enterprises across Canada also trained 116,000 people, provided services to over 5.48 million individuals, and involved 116,000 volunteers.

The full report on these surveys will be released on May 18th at the Econous2016 Conference in Montreal, and at the Association for Nonprofit and Social Economy Research ANSER-ARES 2016 Conference in Calgary (June 1-3).

BC Societies Act

In May, the BC Societies Act was passed into law, with the accompanying legislation expected to be released next month. This will impact 27,000 organizations in BC: about half are charities, and the other half are non-profit organizations. If folks are filing an annual report with Victoria as a ‘BC Society’ then their group will be affected.

The BC Centre for Social Enterprise will be offering webinar support to representatives of BC Societies who wish to have more information about the new legislation; and to understand how to actively transition to the new BC Societies Act. The sessions will delivered by charity lawyer Richard Bridge.

We are offering two November dates for the session (a weekday and weekend day, to accommodate schedules); and the online registration platform is now ready. The cost is $50+GST per organization.
